The dwarven diet consists mainly of underground mushrooms, blind cave fish, and insect meats, eggs, and larva. Cooked food is rare, as stoves and cookfires in the caves produce dangerous amounts of smoke, and most food is pickled, salted, or fermented. Herbs and spices brought from the surface are rare, as few dwarves choose to spend the time in the sun needed to grow and harvest such items. However, trade with surface dwelling races has increased their availability somewhat. Dwarven cuisine is not very popular among surface dwellers.
